Developing a Master Plan creates a long-term vision and strategic roadmap for improving the places people love.

The Southern Cross Learning Precinct Gnibi Wandarahn is an ambitious transformation of the Lismore campus into a thriving education, research, and community precinct. The multi-organisational precinct is designed to advance education, enrich community well-being, and stimulate regional growth, setting a new standard for sustainable development and inclusive, culturally rich public spaces.

The Southern Cross Learning Precinct has been designed to cater to the growth of the student and staff population by enhancing existing facilities and constructing new spaces that support flexible learning and collaborative research. It will focus on creating an accessible and welcoming environment for a diverse and growing academic community.

Gnibi Wandarahn, translating to 'Southern Cross Place of Learning' in the Bundjalung language, embodies Ó£ÌÒÖ±²¥'s deep respect for Country and its dedication to fostering an inclusive space for education, knowledge, and the celebration of Indigenous heritage.

The Master Plan aims to enrich student life at the Lismore campus by introducing vibrant academic and social hubs, modern living spaces, and recreational facilities, all while enhancing learning experiences, creating new educational pathways, and offering programs that boost employability and research capabilities.

The Master Plan outlines future campus development to closely align with vital local and national priorities by introducing Veterinary Sciences and building upon the Lismore campus's established excellence in research and testing. This development strategy aims to drive innovation in key areas like Agribusiness, Health, and Education, fostering regional growth through dedicated academic programs and enhanced research collaborations.

The Southern Cross Learning Precinct is designed to deepen our connection with the Lismore and Northern Rivers community, offering public spaces for events, fostering partnerships with local businesses and cultural groups, and driving regional development with targeted educational and research initiatives, reinforcing its role as a key economic contributor.

Over the next decade, the Lismore campus will undergo significant enhancements, including modern educational and research facilities, community spaces, and extensive refurbishments to existing structures, with a focus on adaptive reuse (as opposed to new builds). Starting in 2024, we'll initiate upgrades and renovations, progressing strategically as we secure the necessary funding. The comprehensive upgrade aims for minimal disruption, with works like classroom refurbishments scheduled during term breaks to ensure the least impact on campus life. Communication about upcoming changes will be proactive, ensuring all affected are informed well in advance. Our phased approach ensures the entire campus benefits from thoughtful development, enhancing our educational environment while respecting our community's needs.

The Master Plan aligns closely with the University's Sustainability Strategy, adopting its objectives to transform the Lismore campus into a model of sustainability and circular economy, targeting net zero emissions by 2035. It prioritises adaptive reuse over new builds, alongside energy efficiency, water conservation, and enhanced green spaces, aiming to minimise our environmental footprint.

Through strategic redevelopment and planning, the Master Plan supports our objectives of advancing global education and research standings by improvements in teaching and research facilities, strengthening international collaborations, and addressing global challenges, thereby preparing our graduates for impactful global roles.
